After enduring numerous anti-trans legislative efforts across the United States, particularly in conservative-leaning states like Florida, a significant victory for transgender rights has emerged at the federal level. On June 11, the case of Doe v. Ladapo declared Florida’s SB 254, one of the notorious anti-trans legislative bills, unconstitutional.

SB 254 was part of a larger trend aimed at curbing the rights of transgender individuals under the guise of protecting minors. However, this bill went beyond mere restrictions or alleged protections and instead outright banned essential medical care for transgender minors. It prohibited minors from accessing crucial gender-affirming treatments like hormone therapy or puberty blockers, even when recommended by medical professionals. It criminalized medical professionals providing any act of gender-affirming care to minors, even with parental consent. For those 18 years and older, it imposed strict requirements for obtaining gender-affirming prescriptions or procedures, including burdensome levels of informed consent.
