It’s difficult to sum up how much Stephen Cozen accomplished in the 50 years since he founded his firm, Cozen O’Connor. In the wake of his passing, it’s even more difficult to describe just how deep his roots in the city ran, or how many people he helped over the course of his career.

At age 29, Cozen launched his four-attorney litigation shop built in the heart of Philadelphia alongside colleague and close friend Patrick O’Connor, currently vice chair of the firm; in the years since, Cozen continued to actively practice and shape the legal landscape in Philadelphia and beyond, with his firm growing across the country and becoming home to over 925 lawyers. Cozen practiced up until he first became ill with acute pneumonia two weeks ago, passing on Dec. 19. His funeral was slated for Dec. 22.
