Following the death of a high school student, Wayne Memorial Hospital has agreed to a $16 million settlement over their alleged failure to properly treat the teenager who died days after being discharged.

The settlement was reached Dec. 20 on behalf of Samson Fluck, a Honesdale High School student-athlete who died in November of 2022 after being discharged from Wayne Memorial Hospital's emergency department. According to the original complaint, the hospital discharged Fluck despite ongoing chest pain and a chest x-ray which allegedly revealed revealed "extremely worrisome findings," including widening of the area between the lungs and enlarged lymph nodes in the chest area. These findings allegedly prompted a radiologist to recommend Fluck undergo a contrast-enhanced CT scan to better visualize his chest. Instead, Fluck was discharged after allegedly being told his x-ray was normal.
