A popular rumor over the winter for Philadelphia politicos was the conjecture that Philadelphia District Attorney Lynne Abraham would step down early in order to run in the state Attorney General’s race.

Another rumor that has percolated in recent months: that Abraham might resign early in order to allow the First Judicial District’s Board of Judges to appoint an interim district attorney who could run as a quasi-incumbent in the 2009 race. Abraham, herself, became district attorney via an appointment by the Board of Judges when Pennsylvania Supreme Court Chief Justice Ronald Castille resigned as district attorney to run for mayor.
