Affinity groups, also called advocacy groups, employee-resource groups and networking groups, comprise employees who have come together because of shared experiences or backgrounds to provide support and networking opportunities. These groups are typically encouraged and supported by their organization. They first appeared in corporate America about 30 years ago, born of the realization that employees can gain strength through networks of those with similar experiences and interests.

Companies have realized that affinity groups are a valuable resource. Of the top 50 companies recognized for diversity in 2006, 94 percent had employee-resource groups. They are also present in about 90 percent of Fortune 500 companies .
