The decision as to who is paid how much is probably the most crucial decision that must be made in most law firms today. Dissatisfaction with the decision-making process and the results may be the single most important factor in the decision of a lawyer to leave his or her firm and seek opportunities in other legal organizations. Failure of the lawyer to appreciate the process is responsible for a major part of this dissatisfaction. Furthermore, the goals, objectives and perhaps the culture of the firm change so that a law firm may ultimately become something quite different from that which the lawyer originally joined.

The following are some of my observations based upon consulting experiences with law firms concerning the process that deals with standards of evaluating lawyers and the compensation decisions based upon these standards.
