In the run-up to Election Day, Republicans have been relentlessly hammering ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, with allegations of widespread voter fraud. Sen. John McCain argued in his final debate with Sen. Barack Obama that ACORN was “on the verge of maybe perpetrating one of the greatest frauds in voter history in this country, maybe destroying the fabric of democracy.” Even before the debate, Media Matters for America noted that between Oct. 10 and Oct. 15, “Fox News had mentioned the community organizing group at least 556 times.” See http://mediamatters.org/countyfair/200810150009. Less than 24 hours after the debate, the FBI leaked word that it was investigating ACORN.

In response, House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers issued a letter to Attorney General Michael Mukasey and FBI Director Robert Mueller defending ACORN and questioning the motivation and timing of the leaked investigation, coming as it does on the heels of the U.S. Attorney scandal in which “political operatives improperly pressured United States Attorneys to investigate and prosecute spurious claims of vote fraud in close proximity to an election.” See http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/10/conyers_on_fbiacorn_probe.php.
