News flash: Not everyone is the same. As you advance in your professional career, the differences between us become even more distinct and, at times, problematic. Entire philosophies, with fancy books, workshops and instructional tapes, are dedicated to helping us understand how unique people are, how to recognize their motivations, and despite it all, how to get along with them.

Knowing that we are all driven by different fears and concerns — as well as desires, goals and cravings — will improve how you relate to everyone with whom you come into contact. Of course, people’s motivations change depending on their age and stage of career. Junior associates have different anxieties than mid-level and senior associates; the latter are motivated by different issues than partners; and law firm managers have still other types of worries.
