Are we really in a post-racial era? Does the election of Barack Obama as President of the United States mean there is no longer a need for diversity initiatives? Are race and/or ethnicity no longer significant or important factors because “we have arrived?”
Some would say that this is true. In fact, Carol (name has been changed), an African-American lawyer, said she was recently informed that discrimination no longer exists because Barack Obama was elected president. Shortly after the election, Carol was shopping with her young son in an upscale boutique. She brought her merchandise to the counter to purchase the items and stood patiently in line waiting her turn. When her turn came, the white female sales clerk chose to ring up the purchases of a white woman who had arrived at the counter after Carol.
