Sometimes, as a journalist, you cover somebody for so long, you come to feel like you know them, even if you really don’t. That’s how I felt about former Chief Justice Ralph J. Cappy, whom I covered for nearly 16 years.

That was part of the reason I was so sad last Saturday when I heard he’d died suddenly. He and I may have sparred a bit in public, but I always thought he was a charming and decent guy. He wasn’t the perfect judge extolled by his supporters, but he also wasn’t the nefarious deal-maker his hardcore detractors tried to paint him as.
