A federal judge has severely slashed a jury’s $10 million verdict in a race bias suit brought by three former Philadelphia police officers after finding that each plaintiff’s compensatory award must be capped at $300,000.

In McKenna v. City of Philadelphia , U.S. District Judge Mary A. McLaughlin found that the plaintiffs had pursued only federal claims, under Title VII, which are subject to the $300,000 cap, and had never properly added state law claims under the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act for which no such caps apply.
