Something is wrong. Each time I turn on the television, I am bombarded with so-called “reality” shows that, apart from their ever-increasing spectacle, are telling us a lie: We can reach our dreams practically overnight.
The participants in this charade don’t have to work hard over an extended period of years to become successful. Whether it’s an apprentice who heads up one of Donald Trump’s business ventures, a young woman who becomes the next top model, a bachelor who finds the love of his life or a no-name singer who rises from obscurity to stardom, these shows are leading us to believe that our dreams can be realized in a matter of one TV season.
