As the campaign for a single open seat on the state Supreme Court entered its final week, campaign contributions became an issue between candidates already trading jabs over judicial reform and the 2005 pay raise.

According to campaign finance reports filed with the Pennsylvania Department of State last week, Democratic candidate Jack Panella had raised roughly $1 million more than his Republican opponent, Joan Orie Melvin. But because it came in after the close of the latest reporting period, a $500,000 contribution to Panella from the political action committee of the Philadelphia Trial Lawyer’s Association has not yet been reported.
