The last week of October was National Pro Bono Week, a new initiative launched by the American Bar Association Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service in coordination with local bar associations. National Pro Bono Week’s goals included recognizing the pro bono efforts of lawyers, recruiting more volunteers and mobilizing community support for pro bono. In instituting this initiative, the ABA acknowledged the increasing need for pro bono services during the current economic climate, as well as the need for increased attorney responses to meet the demand.

Locally, in commemorating National Pro Bono Week, the Philadelphia Bar Association coordinated an open house with representatives from more than a dozen local legal service agencies. There were also scheduled individual programs for Philadelphia Volunteers for the Indigent Program (VIP), the Homeless Advocacy Project, the Support Center for Child Advocates and the SeniorLAW Center.
