The issue of abortion continues to be the Democratic dilemma in the race for U.S. Senate between incumbent Rick Santorum and Robert P. Casey Jr.
National Democratic strategists recruited Casey, in part, to help blunt the issue. The theory was that Casey, with his anti-abortion views, would erode some of Santorum’s support among pro-life voters in Pennsylvania. Then the Democrats and Casey could hammer Santorum’s conservative record and paint him as marching in lockstep with an unpopular Republican president.
