It should surprise no one that Internet service providers such as AOL, EarthLink, Comcast, Verizon, Yahoo or Gmail are, increasingly, rich sources of information in complex criminal and civil matters.
To obtain information from an ISP in a criminal matter, the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, 18 U.S.C.A. Sections 2701-2712 (ECPA), compels law enforcement to use subpoenas, court orders or search warrants, depending upon the nature of the information sought.
