For the judges of the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, 2006 was a year of great excitement amid great sadness as the court celebrated Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr.’s ascension to the U.S. Supreme Court — a first for the 3rd Circuit — but mourned the deaths of two of the court’s titans, former Chief Judge Edward R. Becker and Judge Max Rosenn.

And although the 3rd Circuit welcomed two new judges — New Jersey attorney Michael A. Chigares and Kent A. Jordan, a judge on the district court in Delaware — it ended the year with three vacancies unfilled. A third nominee, Judge Thomas Hardiman of the Western District of Pennsylvania, saw his nomination expire when the Senate took no action.
