Both of Pennsylvania’s intermediate appellate courts were busy in the final year of the aughts, tackling thorny questions that reflected changes in society, technology and business. Both the Superior and Commonwealth courts saw seats vacated by seasoned judges and new judges chosen by voters in an election that continued a trend of women being elected to the state’s appellate courts.

Change in the Superior Court

For the Superior Court, 2009 was a year of historic transition, as four new judges were selected in an election that resulted in the state’s first automatic recount as a matter of law.
