Senior U.S. District Judge Herbert J. Hutton, a longtime member of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania federal bench known for his engaging wit and friendly manner, died Sunday after a long battle with kidney disease. He was 69.

A 1959 graduate of Lincoln University, Judge Hutton went on to earn his law degree at Temple University School of Law in 1962 and later joined Philadelphia’s most prominent black law firm, then known as Norris Schmidt Green Harris & Higginbotham.
