Why is Genarlow Wilson still in prison? Wilson was an honor student and star athlete at Douglas County High School in Georgia. He was convicted of aggravated child molestation under that state’s Child Protection Act. The conviction carries a mandatory sentence of 10 years in prison.

Wilson, 17, was convicted after having consensual oral sex with a 15-year-old girl during a 2003 New Years Eve party. This is not to imply that Wilson’s conduct was appropriate. Wilson was also charged with raping a 17-year-old, semiconscious female at the same party. His conduct, as well as the conduct of several friends, was captured on videotape. At trial, Wilson was acquitted of rape. Four male companions plead guilty to child molestation and sexual battery.
