Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Ralph J. Cappy told his colleagues in Pittsburgh yesterday that he would be stepping down from the bench by year?s end, according to sources in Harrisburg and Philadelphia. Sources have said that Cappy sent his resignation letter to Gov. Edward G. Rendell yesterday as well.

Justice Ronald D. Castille would then take over as chief justice.
