The First Judicial District signed a contract Aug. 26 for the initial design work for a courthouse that will unify its domestic relations and juvenile branches at 15th and Arch streets in Center City. In a press release issued Wednesday hailing the inking of the contract, Chief Justice Ronald D. Castille said: “We are no longer simply talking about a new Family Court building for Philadelphia. We are entering the design phase for this building. The courthouse is going to become a reality.”

Earlier this summer, advocates for a new facility were startled when the Rendell administration didn’t immediately release $200 million in state funds for the building’s construction once the budget — including those funds — was passed into law in July.
