A Wilkes-Barre newspaper’s claim that two disgraced judges rigged a 2006 defamation verdict could open the door for similar claims by auto insurance carriers amid rumors that Luzerne County has been a haven for plaintiffs attorneys to obtain massive awards in UM/UIM arbitrations, insurance defense lawyers say.

Although law enforcement has not made allegations of case fixing in auto insurance arbitration, a source has confirmed the process for appointing arbitrators is the subject of an investigation by federal authorities. In numerous interviews with Pennsylvania Law Weekly, lawyers described an alleged quid-pro-quo scheme in Luzerne County UM/UIM arbitration cases.
