Q: Years ago, I opened an IOLTA account when I was a sole practitioner. Since then, I no longer use that account for clients’ funds, but use it as my personal checking account. Will that bring any difficulties?

A: If someone shows the Office of Disciplinary Counsel that you are writing checks for personal matters on an IOLTA or escrow account, or if you send checks paying personal obligations to the Disciplinary Board, an immediate investigation is likely to take place.
