An old mentor of mine used to preach: “Perceptions matter.” If that’s true, then Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court, which has already been busy the past year dodging numerous bullets, will have its hands full now that two of Justice Joan Orie Melvin’s sisters have been indicted.

Not that any of this has been lost on Chief Justice Ronald D. Castille. He said as much to The Philadelphia Inquirer a few days after the news broke that Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala Jr. had filed theft of services charges against State Sen. Jane Clare Orie, R-Allegheny, and Janine Orie, the chief administrative judicial assistant in Orie Melvin’s court office.
