Recent changes aimed at making Montgomery County’s civil system less lawyer-driven and more court-driven are being welcomed by the bar as a means to bring cases to trial more quickly.
The six judges in the county’s civil division are hearing settlement conferences in cases that they schedule for a date certain on their individual trial list, the independent settlement masters presiding over settlement conferences have been eliminated, and there are no longer separate special listings to give a trial date certain for cases involving complex issues or involving several lawyers.
