General counsel for companies involved in the Deepwater Horizon drilling disaster have received a terse message from attorneys general in five Gulf Coast states: put it in writing.

On Wednesday, May 5, the AGs sent letters to the top lawyers at BP, Halliburton Energy Services, Transocean Holdings Incorporated and Cameron International Corporation saying they want written statements that the companies will stand by their promise to pay for all cleanup and recovery costs. They’re all signed by James Caldwell of Louisiana, Bill McCollum of Florida, Troy King of Alabama, Jim Hood of Mississippi and Greg Abbott of Texas.
