U.S. Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan attempted Tuesday to defuse Republican concerns about her approach to constitutional law and her actions as Harvard Law School dean.
During a full day of questioning before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Kagan said she never broke the law when she restricted military recruiting at Harvard, declared that Supreme Court decisions regarding gun rights are settled law, and disavowed statements by President Obama about the role of empathy in judging.
