When Mark K. Kessler came to Toll Brothers Inc. in 2007 to take over as general counsel for outgoing Don Liu, the plan was to have Kessler train his intended successor along with overseeing the legal department.
For the last three years, Deputy General Counsel John K. McDonald has shadowed Kessler as he worked on corporate governance issues and interacted with senior management and the board of directors. This was all in anticipation of McDonald, 46, taking over as general counsel and chief compliance officer, which he did effective July 1.
