I took over representing a person in a personal injury case, which has now settled. The prior lawyer claims he is owed a fee for his efforts, which is disputed by me and the client. The funds have been paid and are in escrow. May I make a distribution to the client?

It would appear, under Rule of Professional Conduct 1.15, that the disputed funds must be maintained in escrow until the dispute is timely resolved. Of course, if there is no timely effort to resolve the dispute, the lawyer might need to revisit this issue.
