With Charles “Charlie” Bowser Sr.’s death this week, the city of Philadelphia lost one of its pre-eminent civil rights lawyers and political figures. He was 80, according to media reports.
Bowser, a 1957 graduate of the Temple University School of Law, ran twice for Philadelphia mayor and litigated well-known civil rights cases, including suing on behalf of the NAACP over the use of blackface by some Philadelphia Mummers.
