This summer, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) issued final regulations on the definition of “meaningful use” for purposes of health care providers obtaining incentive benefits for use of electronic health records (EHR) pursuant to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA).

In a previous article, we explained the proposed rule for “meaningful use” and the incentive program in detail. This article does not seek to repeat information that has not changed, but will summarize some of the key changes between the proposed rule and the final rule. In addition, we will explain an alternative electronic-based incentive benefit available to health care providers through the use of e-prescribing.
