Early stage merger discussions between Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld and Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe and more recently between Pittsburgh-based Reed Smith and Dallas-based Thompson & Knight are perhaps a sign that large-scale mergers — or at least discussions of such deals — could be picking up along with the economy.

The Am Law Daily,” a Legal affiliate blog, first reported Friday on the preliminary talks between Reed Smith and Thompson & Knight. Leadership at both firms confirmed the preliminary discussions to the blog.
