From April 20 until Aug. 29, about 185 million gallons of oil spilled from BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil rig into the Gulf of Mexico. The spill, nearly 20 times more severe than the Exxon Valdez, was the worst in U.S. history.
Since that time, about 300 lawsuits have been filed in 11 states against BP. Litigants will undoubtedly attempt to prove that BP and others failed to use reasonable care in both maintaining the oil rig and in having an appropriate response plan in the event of a spill. And it will not be surprising if BP and others ultimately pay large sums of money to settle these claims.
