WASHINGTON – James Burdett, who until recently was a partner in the Washington office of Venable, has joined Barnes & Thornburg and will head that firm’s intellectual property practice.

Burdett is a former director of worldwide patent development for Compaq Computer Corp. In that role, he worked to protect the company’s research and development investments. He also oversaw the company’s patent work in a range of areas, including experience with microprocessor-based systems; digital and optical communication devices; data compression, decompression and encryption algorithms; magnetic and optical storage devices; and storage area networks.
