A practicing attorney has narrowly escaped serving jail time for what a Nassau County judge called his repeated attempts “to manipulate the judicial system” to avoid paying his daughter’s court-ordered college expenses.

Confronted with the third contempt motion brought by the wife of John J.P. Krol, Supreme Court Justice Robert A. Bruno on Oct. 22 sentenced Mr. Krol to six months in jail for contempt of court for “willfully and intentionally” failing to pay $9,733 for tuition at the University of Rhode Island and his daughter’s rent.
