The mere mention of the names of certain states is enough to conjure up mental images of big mountains and myriad ski areas: Colorado, California, Utah, Vermont. But Pennsylvania? If not, it should.
Pennsylvania is the home to 33 ski areas and hosts, on average, close to 3 million skier visits per year, which ranks it in the top five or six among all states. Although perhaps a shocking statistic at first blush, the numbers make sense when one considers Pennsylvania’s relatively large size (much of which is covered by the rolling hills that those of us on the East coast refer to as mountains), and the proximity of these mountains to large cities — including Philadelphia and New York.
