A federal appeals court has revived an antitrust conspiracy suit against Pittsburgh’s largest hospital system and the area’s dominant health insurer that alleges they joined forces to hobble the second-largest hospital.

A unanimous three-judge panel concluded that the plaintiff, West Penn Allegheny Health System Inc., had alleged valid claims that the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center had conspired with Highmark Inc. and that UPMC attempted to monopolize the Allegheny County market for specialized hospital services.
