It is very unusual for a political candidate to roll out a major initiative on a long-standing issue very late in a campaign. However, just two weeks before his election, Governor-elect Tom Corbett, then the overwhelming favorite, placed privatization of the Pennsylvania’s liquor system front-and-center, issuing a statement that said, “I will present a plan for the privatization of the state liquor store system that helps to address the state’s need for additional funds, insures ongoing revenues and minimizes the impact on current workers.”

With that press release, and with Corbett’s overwhelming victory November 2, Pennsylvania is certain to join Mississippi, North Carolina, Virginia and Montgomery County, Maryland, as major jurisdictions seriously revisiting state control.
