Although former Pennsylvania state Sen. Vincent J. Fumo is nearly halfway through serving his 55-month prison term in a federal prison in Kentucky, a three-judge appeals panel appeared poised Wednesday to vacate that sentence and order new hearings, potentially leading to a much longer sentence.

Questions from two of the judges strongly suggested that they found faults in how the trial judge, U.S. District Judge Ronald L. Buckwalter, had calculated Fumo’s recommended sentence under the federal guidelines as well as Buckwalter’s ultimate decision to impose a much shorter prison term because of Fumo’s extraordinary public service.
