Simply surviving in the real estate industry would have been a feat in the last three years, but for the 13-lawyer legal department at Horsham, Pa.-based luxury home builder Toll Brothers Inc., survival came in the form of business acumen that helped the company enter new markets, do more work in-house and even generate several millions of dollars toward the bottom line.

The department has grown in the last few years and has shifted its focus along with the real estate market, in part under the leadership of General Counsel John McDonald, who took over in 2010. There are 11 lawyers at the corporate headquarters, one in Virginia and another in California. The groups are split generally between litigation and transactional work, and anything that doesn’t quite fit into either of those realms falls to David Larkin, Toll Brothers’ national director of community associations and general counsel of ancillary businesses.
