A Philadelphia jury deciding only the amount of damages a woman suffered in an accident with a First Transit bus awarded $5.15 million despite conflicting testimony as to the severity of her injuries and prospects for work.

The verdict sheet in Waldon v. SEPTA already had “X” marks next to “yes” under the questions of whether defendants SEPTA, First Transit and bus driver Troy Chamberlain were negligent in the accident and whether that negligence caused the harm to plaintiff Winona Hurst Waldon. The 12 jurors only had to determine damages owed to Waldon and her husband, Walter. They found 11-1 on June 20 that she was due $5 million and that her husband was owed $150,000 for loss of consortium.
