Proponents of same-sex marriage continue to gain serious momentum. On June 24, New York became the sixth state, and by far the largest, to legalize same-sex marriage. Eight other states already recognize civil unions, which grant same-sex couples many of the rights of marriage.

And in February 2011, Attorney General Eric Holder announced that the Obama administration would no longer defend the Defense of Marriage Act, signaling a shift in the administration’s policy and setting the stage for a national debate on same-sex marriage.
