Any lawyer contemplating a job switch in these economic times should have a clear game plan. Here are six steps that make sense for any law firm or in-house attorney planning a move.

1. CREATE A 5-YEAR PLAN

First and foremost, it is important to be thoughtful about why you are looking for a new opportunity. Often in these economic times there is not a choice, but no matter what you are seeking, the focal point of your search should be the answer to the question: “Where do I want to be in 5 years?” Concentrate on what you want out of a new position and why you want to leave your current position. There are no right answers or criteria, only what will motivate you and what you love about your work.
