In what is believed to be one of the largest awards ever in Schuylkill County, a Shamokin, Pa.-based trucking company and its owner have obtained a nearly $2.1 million jury verdict, including $1.5 million in punitive damages, against a Pottsville, Pa.-based coal supplier, plus an additional $70,000 directed verdict against the supplier’s affiliates.

The plaintiffs, Empire Trucking Co., and its owner Gary Lorenz Sr., had alleged breach of contract and tortious interference with business relationships against defendants Reading Anthracite Coal Co. and two of its affiliates, claiming the coal supplier had reneged on an agreement to pay Empire fuel surcharges and had tried to poach Empire’s subcontractors in an attempt to circumvent the surcharges.
