APL is designed, in part, to help the dependent spouse maintain the standard of living enjoyed while married. Also, and perhaps more importantly, APL is based on the need of one party to have equal financial resources to pursue and/or defend a divorce proceeding when, in theory, the other party has major assets — the financial sinews of domestic warfare.

APL is available to a spouse and focuses on the ability of the individual who is seeking APL during the course of the divorce litigation to defend him or herself and to be placed on equal footing with the more able spouse. The only issue is whether the amount awarded is reasonable for the purpose, which turns on the economic resources available to the paying spouse.
