I am representing a wife in a domestic case and the husband refuses to get a lawyer. I want to meet with the husband and try to negotiate a settlement with him. Can I do so or would that violate the Rules of Professional Conduct?

The Rule of Professional Conduct at issue is Rule 4.3, dealing with an unrepresented person. Sometimes in domestic cases, one party will not get a lawyer but just attempt to delay everything. Sometimes there is an ill purpose for that and sometimes it is just a matter of economics for the other spouse. Sometimes it is just the other spouse being somewhat short-sighted.
