Former Philadelphia prosecutor Dan McCaffery is dropping out of the race for Pennsylvania attorney general in what he described as an attempt to give the Democratic Party a chance to unify and dethrone the GOP from its decades-long stronghold as the state’s top prosecutor.

McCaffery, now a partner at Jenkintown, Pa., firm Friedman Schuman, made the announcement Wednesday after Philly.com reported his departure from the race. A spokesperson for his campaign said the attorney would not be endorsing either of the two remaining Democratic candidates: former U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy and former Lackawanna County prosecutor Kathleen Kane.
