While the new year brings a host of emotions to associates — relief that they made billables, anxiety over new cases, the uncertainty about health care open enrollment and anticipation that one’s bonus will cover past shopping sprees — the winter season is also the time when many firms name new partners. This time fills senior associates with both hope and fear. Trust me. I’ve been there. Recently, in fact.

It was just on Jan. 1 that I became a partner at Duane Morris. It was a promotion that ended several gut-wrenching elevation seasons, where I saw colleagues and friends make partner or get passed over — seasons which, for me, ended in relief and gratitude.
