A federal judge has doubled the jury’s award to the University of Pittsburgh in its patent infringement suit against a Palo Alto, Calif.-based manufacturer of medical devices, making the total amount $73.6 million.

U.S. District Judge Arthur Schwab of the Western District of Pennsylvania also awarded attorney fees to the university in what he called an “exceptional” case. The judge also assigned the university $12 million in prejudgment interest and ordered defendant Varian Medical Systems to pay an ongoing royalty of 10.5 percent of sales from the equipment using the patented technology.
